Rescued from neglect, Caramel, a Shetland pony, endured years of pain from untreated laminitis. His last hope was an innovative surgery at Equitom, where a life-changing amputation gave him the chance to live without suffering. With resilience and expert care, Caramel is now on his way to recovery, soon to receive a custom prosthesis. His journey is a testament to courage, compassion, and second chances.
The Story of Caramel
Shetland ponies: small in size, big in determination
In a forgotten pasture in Mons-en-Pévèle, a small town south of Lille, a Shetland pony named Caramel had been living isolated and neglected for years. For years he was left to his own devices, unattended, surrounded by lush grass and fruit trees. Every day he ate food that had far too much sugar. The inevitable happened: repeated attacks of laminitis.
Laminitis is a painful condition, often linked to too much sugar in the diet. In Caramel's case, it was never treated. Without farrier or medication to relieve his pain, deformity gradually grew. His feet tilted at alarming angles: 33° on the left foreleg and 55° on the right foreleg. His limbs could no longer support his weight and began to collapse.
Caramel already endured more than most could imagine. Rescued from neglect, he was taken in by Terre Animale after suffering years of pain from untreated laminitis. With a body worn from pain and a future that seemed uncertain, the question remained: would we be able to save him? His journey at Equitom was filled with challenges and tough decisions, leaving everyone wondering if hope could truly prevail for this little fighter. But with a heart full of resilience, Caramel was given a chance for a fresh start after a life of struggle.
His arrival at Equitom
On November 12, 2024, Caramel walked through the doors of the Equitom clinic in Namur, accompanied by the Terre Animale team. They came to us with a clear vision: give Caramel a shot at a life without pain. As soon as he arrived, the Shetland pony was attended to by veterinarian Florent David, who was committed to exploring all possible options for this little fighter.
The tests were conclusive: the necrosis had reached the bone, the tendons were severely contracted, and the fat pad couldn’t be saved. Any attempt to straighten the cannon bone would not only be futile but would also prolong his suffering. Yet, a glimmer of hope remained.
A last resort
Due to his small size (weighing less than 100 kg), Caramel was an ideal candidate for amputation. Normally this solution is rearely considered in France. Veterinarian Florent, drawing experience in the United States where the technique is more common, was able to offer this innovative option.
Although radical, the operation could enable Caramel to regain near-normal mobility thanks to the creation of an adapted prosthesis. And most important: to live without constant pain.
A tough decision
Amputation is a decision with deep significance. It’s not just an operation; it would be a complete turning point in Caramel’s life. After thorough discussion between the vets at Equitom and the Terre Animale team, the decision was made: Caramel would get his chance.
“Caramel is just 15 years old, only halfway through his life,” stress the members of Terre Animale. “Despite all his suffering, he’s holding on with remarkable determination. We have to give him a fair chance.”
This little pony, whose strenght of character has left everyone in awe, was about to start a new chapter. Despite the risks, Caramel showed us he was ready to fight. Every effort being made to ensure he can live a dignified, pain-free life. At Equitom, he’s not just a patient—he’s a symbol of hope and courage, and his story is one of inspirational resilience.
The surgery
At the time of the operation, the diagnosis was clear: the infections caused by the bedsores had reached the bone. This critial condition left very few options, making it vital to act quickly. Given the serenity of the damage, our surgeon made the decision to amputate above the carpus, at the level of the distal radius. This approach allowed us to remove all the infected tissue while preserving as much healthy limb as possible, providing a solid foundation for what came next.
During the surgery, pins were inserted to anchor a special cast, protecting the stump from direct pressure and promoting the best possible healing. We also used a podial pad graft taken from the foot, which was placed into the would to strengthen the stump, helping it better handle pressure in the future, especially when fitted with the final prosthesis.
Follow-up
After his first surgery, Caramel continued to show remarkable strength and resilience. Accustomed to life in this pasture with his companions, he bravely adapted to life in a stable, though his adjustment wasn’t without its challenges. Despite his fatigue and lingering pain, this little fighter managed to move around regularly, taking each step with incredible determination, never slowing down.
To help him regain the 10 kg he had lost due to his condition, the Equitom-team of nutritionists developed a specialized diet. This plan was tailored to meet his nutritional needs and support a fast, effective recovery. Careful attention was also given to his front foreleg, which had developed abscesses from overloading. We wanted to ensure his overall comfort!
Caramel remains an extraordinary pony, moving with confidence and accepting the many treatments he received with a gentle nature.
Removal of pins and molding for final prosthesis
A few weeks after the surgery, with Caramel’s stump healing well, our team was able to remove the pins used to stabilize the protective cast. The milestone marked significant progress in his recovery.
Next, our team took a precise mold of his leg. This mold will be used by the prosthetist to craft a custom prosthesis that perfectly fits Caramel’s needs. Designed for maximum comfort and to restore full mobility, the final prosthesis should be ready in the coming weeks.
Caramel continues to make steady progress, regaining both strength and his playful spirit. This little warrior continues to inspire admiration, proving that every effort to give him a better life is worthwhile.
Recovery
Caramel continues to show incredible strength as he recovers at Equitom Namur. Three months post-surgery, he’s doing well and eagerly awaiting the arrival of his custom prosthesis, which will soon be ready for fitting! In the meantime, he’s enjoying cozy naps in his stable, wrapped up in a warm blanket, resting up for the exciting days ahead.
